If you break your toe, then unfortunately you can be expected to be in quite a bit of pain for a while However, there are some things you can do to lessen the pain, the swelling and even the bruising. This article will offer you tips and advice for dealing with a broken toe.

You want to get off of your feet – The very first thing you are going to want to do if you break a toe is to find a comfortable place where you can lay. This is due to the fact that you are going to want to lay back with your foot propped up. When it is propped, it should be just above chest level. You need to get ice on your toe – You want to put ice on your toe and the surrounding area as quickly as you can. You can use an ice pack, crushed ice or even a bag of frozen vegetables like corn or peas. You won't want to grab a bag of large or square ice cubes because they will feel uncomfortable on your already sore toe. You want to wrap the ice in a towel, so your toe doesn't get too cold and only leave the ice on for twenty minutes at a time, with at least twenty minutes in-between. You can also take over the counter anti-inflammatories to help with the inflammation and pain.

You want to keep your toe from moving – One of the best ways to prevent your toe from moving is to tape it to the toe right next to it. If you have a hard time doing this, then you should at least wrap it with an Ace bandage. Try to stay off of your foot as much as you can.

See your podiatrist – Go in to see your podiatrist as soon as you can. There's normally not a reason to go to the emergency room for a broken toe, because they will only treat it with the methods already stated above. However, you should make an appointment to see the podiatrist so they can make sure the rest of your foot is okay and so they can properly bandage it and give you more advice on tending to it.
